What is our relationship with the future?
This performance flows from anxiety to defiance, diving into darkness and intense light.
A gaze into the dark sky clarifies all doubts.
Preparation for the Present addresses the emotional navigation of challenges posed by the climate crisis. Its structure is based on a sequence of (affective, physical, cognitive) exercises as a kind of training for catastrophes – both imaginable and unimaginable – grounded in present-day realities and historical experiences. The performance consciously plays with the absurdity and impossibility of such a task in the face of uncertain consequences wrought by decades of slow violence under fossil capitalism and extractivist logic.
Immersed in darkness, allowing flashes of white light, the work is concerned with the overwhelming emotions that emerge across a spectrum – from anxiety and apathy to readiness and resistance. It embraces this disorder and its irresolvability, as well as the frustration of conflicting decisions about how we spend our present time.
Preparation for running, scarcity, or heat is just as important as preparation for endurance, embrace, and persistence – all in the hope that a community of friends can withstand the rhythms and challenges that lie ahead.

This performance was created in co-production with the Perforations Festival and Domino, as part of the Scena Ribnjak residency programme in collaboration with the Ribnjak Youth Centre and the Performance Art Network, with support from the City of Zagreb and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, as well as scenography donations from Pijole-G and STRATBAG.
