Workshop: “How to build your avatar?”

Requirements to participate:
• Intermediate knowledge in any style of dance or movement practice
• Please come with comfortable clothes and socks
• The session will include a basic 45-minute contemporary dance warm-up
Description:
This workshop invites participants to explore, through the body, what it means to move as an “avatar”: an expanded, unknown, altered identity. Inspired by the universe of the choreographic installation ANGEL VR, we will work to deepen how to create an identity parallel to ourselves.
Through group reflections and guided improvisations — solo, duet and group work — we will investigate what happens when we create our avatar, share it with another person, and transform it collectively. The workshop combines play, perception and performance-making, with no previous experience in virtual reality required.

Avatâra Ayuso trained in Spain in Ballet, Tango and Linguistics. She continued her postgraduate and master’s studies at London Contemporary Dance School and Palucca Schule Dresden. Through D.A.N.C.E. she worked with William Forsythe, Wayne McGregor, Frédéric Flamand and Angelin Preljocaj. In 2015 and 2019 she was nominated for the UK National Dance Awards. She founded her independent company AVA DANCE Company in 2008 and her choreographic works have been presented in festivals and theatres around the world including the Venice Architecture Biennale, the National Theatre of Chile, European Centre for the Arts Hellerau Dresden, the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan, and in countries such as Burkina Faso, Morocco, Canada, Taiwan, China, Japan and Ecuador.
In 2020 she founded the UK-based NGO AWA DANCE dedicated to developing leadership in women and girls, using the transformative power of dance as a tool to empower their voices. Her work in teaching, creation and leadership is guided by five values: research, cultural exchange, proactivity, dreaming and empowerment.
