ABOUT THE FILM:
Bijelo – The Way I Want to Remember is a poetic cinematic record in the form of a personal topography of memory. Through the language of movement and dance, the film explores the spaces that shaped the author’s childhood and formative years. Rather than following a conventional narrative structure, it maps internal spaces of memory through the presence of the body in the transitional zones of the city of Pula – at stations, on staircases, roadsides and within old urban quarters. In this film, dance is the only constant that persists through time, serving as a moving reminder of long-lost places and emotions.

AUTHOR’S BIOGRAPHY:
Dramaturge / Performer / Choreographer / Educator / Curator
Alexandra Madsen (b. 1978) graduated in Performance Dramaturgy and completed her undergraduate studies in contemporary dance (Education pathway) at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb. She further developed her knowledge and skills both in Croatia and abroad, working with renowned international dance teachers and exploring various contemporary dance practices, including training at the Laban Centre in London and the ImPulsTanz festival in Vienna. From 2009 to 2016, she was a permanent member of the Zagreb Dance Company, collaborating with numerous international choreographers. Parallel to this, she develops her own artistic practice, exploring expanded forms of performance and choreography. Together with Ognjen Vučinić, she co-founded the MasaDanceCompany arts organisation, under which she has created a series of notable productions, most notably YOU (TI), SHE (ONA), RAVE (ON)!, and Parallel Campaigns (Paralelne kampanje).
Her artistic achievements have been recognized both nationally and internationally. She is a three-time recipient of the Croatian Actor Award: in 2024 for Best Dance Performance and Choreography (Parallel Campaigns) and in 2014 for Best Dance Performance (Hermaphrodites of the Soul by Žak Valenta). Her accolades also include international recognition: the Critics’ Award at the Festival of Choreographic Miniatures in Belgrade (2011) and the Grand Prix at the 6th International Contemporary Dance Festival in Algiers (2014) for the performance YOU, co-authored with Vučinić.
Alongside her artistic and curatorial work, Madsen is an active educator, teaching contemporary dance, partnering, and improvisation, as well as various theoretical courses. She has taught at the Secondary School for Contemporary Dance within the Franjo Lučić Art School in Velika Gorica and collaborates with the Institute for Contemporary Dance in Belgrade, the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, and Alma Mater Europaea in Ljubljana on their contemporary dance study programmes. Furthermore, she actively writes professional texts, reviews, and critiques for dance magazines and portals. Madsen is also highly active in cinema and film production; she serves as the first intimacy coordinator on the HRT series Shame (Sram) and collaborates on numerous films as a choreographer and movement consultant. As an author and director of experimental dance film, she nurtures an interdisciplinary creative expression, blending dance, visual expression, and narrative. She is a member of the Croatian Dancers Association (UPUH), where she serves on the management board, and the Screenwriters and Playwrights Association (SPID). She is currently completing her doctoral studies at the Institute for Contemporary Dance in Belgrade. She lives and works in Zagreb.
