Global Water Dances 2025: Dancing for Rivers and Community on the Korana and at Aquatika

On Saturday, 14 June 2025, Karlovac joined the international initiative Global Water Dances with the programme “Dancing for Rivers and Community,” held by the Korana River and at Aquatika Square. This global event, held every two years, brings together dancers from around the world to perform the same choreography and music, sending a powerful message about the importance of water conservation. Karlovac hosted the initiative for the third time, using dance to raise awareness about water protection and to promote human rights to clean water, dance, and nature.

The programme was organised by the Centre for Dance and Performing Arts F.R.E.E. D.A.N.C.E. Karlovac, with performances by dancers from the Creative Ensemble under the artistic direction of Melita Spahić Bezjak.

Workshops were held throughout the month, culminating in the main outdoor event featuring a series of captivating performances, including:

* An opening ritual

* Community dances titled “Rhythm of the Korana River” – a unique dance interpretation of Karlovac

* Global Dance 2025 – a simultaneous choreography performed worldwide to the same music, creating a global synergy

* Audience participation dance – simple movements inviting the audience to actively engage in an interactive and moving experience

The programme, through workshops, performances, and participatory dance, strengthened the community’s connection to the Korana River and emphasised the importance of collective action and artistic activism in environmental protection.
